Jet2 asks boy in mobility scooter to ‘prove disability’

Alex Johnson narrates how she was “appalled” with the “humiliating” behavior and treatment her son received some time ago. A 10-year-old boy who is disabled was made to prove his disability. This happened at Split Airport, Croatia when he was getting a Jet2 flight home.

According to her, Jack who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy was treated badly and was “mortified”. However, a Jet2 spokesman said the firm was “really sorry”.

Jack is a young boy of former London Broncos, Wigan Warriors, Salford City Reds, and Castleford Tigers rugby league player Andy Johnson.

’embarrassed’

Mrs. Johnson said, when they returned home, her young son had a “complete meltdown”. Jack’s family shared “great memories” during their visit to Croatia. However, the holiday was “ravaged” when they were inquiring their return flight home directly to Leeds-Bradford Airport.

Despite having no issue on an outbound flight, the staff at Split Airport seemed to have no information, records or details of Jack’s disability. She continues to say that, she was asked in front of her son: “Do you have a proof that Jack is disabled?” In a “disbelief” she showed his son blue badge.

After two hours, the family was allowed to take a return flight. “The boy was so embarrassed.” Mrs. Johnson said that Jack was made to feel different. The lad doesn’t like any fuss.

She said, “This is a lesson learned and all I ask is more training to all staff to ensure no repeat of such an isolated incident. This should not happen to another disabled person. These kinds of people should be respected and treated with dignity.

Jet2 has apologized and promised to review their procedures to ensure such a mistake does not happen again.
